Carlstadt merchant says he was scammed in shady deal | By Chris Neidenberg / Reporter
CARLSTADT (Sept. 2, 2010) —
While justice may very well be blind, merchant Ronald Radomski views
local police as “blind to the injustice” he has suffered in trying to
solve what would seem like a clear-cut $4,000 bad check case.
Radomski, owner of Cutting Techniques, Inc. on Industrial Road in
Carlstadt, said the case allegedly involves a New York City man, who, he
complained, keeps snubbing his request to pay up without even trying to
hide. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

New talks emerge on combining courts | By Ray Smith / Reporter
WALLINGTON (Sept. 2, 2010) —
Municipalities throughout New Jersey are certainly not immune to budget
cuts. With the development of a large municipal public safety complex in
East Rutherford, some towns are wondering if cutting costs could be
achieved by combining municipal courts.
At the Thursday, Aug. 26 Wallington Borough Council meeting, the five
council members in attendance voted unanimously to authorize a
municipal court feasibility study. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: A warning to Carlstadt seniors | (Sept. 2, 2010) — TO THE EDITOR:
It has come to my attention that Carlstadt is considering building
senior citizen housing buildings at vacant school sites. As an East
Rutherford senior citizen, I would like my neighboring borough to think
long and hard about this decision.
East Rutherford’s senior citizen housing project was a welcomed
addition to our borough years back. However, I cannot remember how or
when it was taken away from us, but our senior housing building is now
owned by the county for years now and is used for public housing.
Carlstadt seniors — be forewarned.
It sounds like a great idea now, but will it benefit local seniors in the future?
Carole J. Cosentino / East Rutherford

EAST RUTHERFORD (Aug. 23, 2010, 5:20 p.m.) — It has been bandied about as a transportation concept since at least 2003. On Sept. 7, that concept becomes policy.

and Carlstadt will travel along new routes, going to and leaving the
Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

Becton Regional High School scores high marks on HSPA | By Chris Neidenberg / Reporter
EAST RUTHERFORD (Aug. 19, 2010) —
For the 2009-10 state High School Proficiency Assessment, Henry P.
Becton Regional High School saw the most students achieve “proficient”
status in language arts and math since 2005, the district’s regional
curriculum director reported.
The findings, released by Melissa Varley, appointed to the post last
year to better align curriculum between Becton and its two sending
districts, have given school board members reason to hope tools
implemented under her watch for improving HSPA performance are working.
Passing HSPA is required for graduation. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

Unexpected finds in the wetlands | By John Soltes / Editor in Chief
(Aug. 12, 2010) — The
wildlife of the wetlands in the South Bergen area is quite
unpredictable. The local environment, which plays host to a number of
avian, fish and mammal species, is never a textbook habitat. When
naturalists and staff members of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission
make their way through the environs of the Hackensack River, serendipity
is the rule rather than the exception.
Recently, Jim Wright, communication officer for the NJMC and
contributor to the Meadowlands Blog, encountered what he called a
“doubly serendipitous” situation in Carlstadt. While he was accompanying
a researcher with the New York Audubon Society at the usual stomping
ground for the area’s snowy egrets, an unexpected visitor looked on. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

$16.6M Becton grant still in limbo | By Chris Neidenberg / Reporter
EAST RUTHERFORD (Aug. 9, 2010, 1:15 p.m.) —
A Hasbrouck Heights political activist, who has battled authorities
over Teterboro Airport plane noise for years, is insisting a Port
Authority of New York and New Jersey official recently assured her Henry
P. Becton Regional High School will not lose a $16.6 million
soundproofing grant.
Carol Skiba, a former Democratic councilwoman in her community, told The Leader
that Ralph Tragale, the agency’s government and community affairs
manager, offered his guarantee after the Teterboro Airport Noise
Abatement Advisory Committee’s July 28 meeting. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

Becton could lose millions in noise abatement grant money | By Chris Neidenberg / Reporter
EAST RUTHERFORD (July 23, 2010, 8:45 a.m.) —
A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman acknowledged recently
that Henry P. Becton Regional High School could lose a $16.6 million
airplane noise abatement grant — if new monitoring shows decibel levels
now fall below the guidelines required for using the financial outlay.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued to The Leader,
Rep. Steve Rothman (D-9) harshly criticized the agency’s decision and
vowed to use the weight of his office in trying to make sure Becton can
retain the grant, regardless of the results. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.

Locals turn out to support ‘brave young girl’ | By Jennifer Vazquez / Reporter
CARLSTADT (July 20, 2010, 2:50 p.m.)
— On Friday, July 16, hundreds of local residents from Carlstadt
and its surrounding communities gathered for a BBQ to show support and
lend a helping hand to a young borough resident who, according those who
attended, has shown an amazing amount of courage through a difficult
and trying time.
The 13-year-old girl was badly burned when a “firepot,” a sort of
gel-fueled candle, exploded and splashed on her. Being discharged from
Saint Barnabas Medical Center roughly a week ago, and making encouraging
strides toward her recovery, the Carlstadt resident ended up making an
appearance at the BBQ, according to her aunt Dee Gilligan. Click the READ MORE link below for the complete story.
