BlogsYou will get money back

Lots of people spend January trying to figure out how to pay all those Christmas bills. Filing and winning a tax appeal may be an out of the ordinary solution to this common problem. How? If you win, you get money back!

BlogsThe Count Down

The count is on! There are exactly 90 days from New Year's Day until April 1 when tax appeals have to be filed at the County. In our case, we will have to pay a $100 filing fee, so if I save $1.11 every day between now and then, I'll accumulate the $100 painlessly.

BlogsLet's get started

It's not too soon to start gathering comparable real estate sale numbers for your tax appeal. The County's official forms won't be available until February, but if you are planning to do the whole thing yourself, this is one part you can start on now.

BlogsThe Letter
I knew it was coming. I prepared myself for its arrival. Yet when it came it was a bit of a shock. I remember reading the letter, “Since new appraisals have been made to reflect current market values, the tax rate required to raise the necessary revenue to support next year's county, school and municipal budgets will be SUBSTANTIALLY REDUCED. Therefore, an increase in your assessment DOES NOT necessarily mean an increase in your tax bill.” I actually took some comfort in the expectation that the tax rate would be adjusted. As promised, our assessment went up, and the tax rate went down. But it didn't go down enough. I guess I forgot about the inability of government to exercise fiscal restraint.

BlogsRevals: They put a crack in our nest egg
Property revaluation. I heard about it first when the town of Rutherford began to discuss it. My reaction: I’m glad I don’t live in Rutherford. But then, the “mandatory” revaluation came to Lyndhurst as well. And it hit our budget hard. How hard? Let's just say the retirement nest egg now has a big crack in it!

BlogsPlanning to file a tax appeal? Me too!
Want to file a tax appeal? Well, so do I! Follow me as I go I through the process ... updates will added during the week....

I took the first step toward the tax appeal today by visiting the County Tax Board's Web site www.co.bergen.nj.us/taxboard/index.html They have a handy dandy link describing the process: www.co.bergen.nj.us/taxboard/appeal.html. I read the page in about 5 minutes, but I will need to go back and spend more time to fully digest the material.
